Welcome by Sharon Bamford, CEO, UKIBC
Before taking up her post as founding CEO for the UK India Business Council in September 2007, Sharon had started five companies ranging through Montessori pre-schools to drilling simulation and sold technology into markets as diverse as Libya, Vietnam, China and Russia.
She has lectured in entrepreneurship, was Director for the University of Edinburgh’s flagship science park and managed its incubator supporting and developing academic spin-outs and most recently was Chief Executive of the Scottish Institute for Enterprise, which supported and developed entrepreneurship in all of Scotland’s higher education institutions.

Having qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Ernst and Young, London, and graduated in Law from Cambridge University, Karan Bilimoria developed a less gassy, premium lager brewed to perfectly appeal to both ale drinkers and lager drinkers alike, and to complement food.
Fourteen years later, Cobra Beer is one of the fastest growing beer brands in the UK and was ranked in the 1999 Sunday Times Virgin Atlantic Fast Track 100, the list of the UK’s fastest growing unquoted companies. The brand has a current retail value turnover of £80 million and is sold in over 6,000 restaurants, available to 6,000 pubs, bars and clubs and in leading multiples throughout the UK and has been exported to 35 countries worldwide. Cobra Beer was awarded two Grand Gold Medals and nine Gold Medals at the 2005 Monde Selection, Brussels - World Selection of Quality, 2 Grand Gold Medals and four gold medals in 2004, and Gold for three successive years at the 2003, 2002 and 2001Monde Selection awards.
Karan is a member of the Government’s National Employment Panel and is the Chairman of The Panel’s Small and Medium Sized Enterprise (SME) Board. He is a Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London and held the position of a Mentor in the Joint Police Mentoring Initiative. He is the Chancellor of Thames Valley University and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. In addition, Karan was recently appointed as UK Co-Chairman of the Indo-British Partnership (IBP) by the British Government. Karan is the Vice Chairman of the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Asian Business Association, a member of the RSA Advisory Council, a charter and board member of TiE UK, a member of the Young Presidents’ Organisation (YPO) and Chairman of the YPO London Chapter.

Sir Martin Sorrell founded WPP in 1985 and has been chief executive throughout its history. During this period, WPP has grown rapidly to become one of the world’s leading
communications services groups.

An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, Mr. Bikram Dasgupta is a first generation entrepreneur – a

With an entrepreneurial journey spanning across more than two decades, Bikram has been
an influential figure in piloting India’s IT revolution and bringing the PC to the masses.
With Globsyn, Bikram ushered in a new era in the private high-end education space in both
technology and management spaces. His book “Minds on Fire – an Infotech entrepreneur’s
journey” is a case study book in all the leading B-Schools in India.
The Hon. Angad Paul, CEO, Caparo plc
The Hon. Angad Paul is Chief Executive of Caparo plc, he has lead the Group’s
development in India, and under his tenure, Caparo’s growth has been rapid. Following
his chairmanship of the Caparo Engineering division, in 2002 he was appointed as Chief
Executive of the Caparo Group. Since then group turnover has increased by more than
125% and the group has moved into downstream components, design engineering and
materials testing along with wider ranging activities encompassing hotels, film distribution
and private equity. He is now taking the group into Thailand, Mexico and China.
Dan Sandhu, Entrepreneur and CEO, ACIS
Born and brought up in the UK, Dan started his career with PricewaterhouseCoopers,
qualifying as a Chartered Accountant. He then worked in China with Mitsui Babcock an
Eastern Europe in the Media industry. In 2001 Dan moved to India as the India CEO of a
London based outsourcing business he helped found. Having sold the business to Vertex in
2002, he grew it to a team of more than 2,600 In India. Oak Hill Capital acquired the Vertex
Group in Jan 07. Dan is keen advocate of entrepreneurial endeavor and in addition to being
a Charter member of TiE Delhi is an active member of the Indian Angel Network and has
invested in the Media, Technology and Retail sectors in India.
In his most recent endeavor he is involved with ACIS, a UK based technology business. As market leader ACIS delivers location based real time information to the traveling community. ACIS is a keen supporter of technology enabled innovative solutions to improve community information, and enhancing social inclusion.
Vandana Saxena Poria OBE, Entrepreneur and Founder, Get Through Guides.
Vandana Saxena Poria is a UK Chartered Accountant who has Indian heritage but was born
and raised in London.
She has worked with Ernst & Young and was also the CEO of the international division of BPP Holdings Plc. Vandana has also served as Vice-Chair of the British Chamber of Commerce in Hungary.
Vandana gave up her successful corporate career in Europe and chose to move to India in 2005 as she wanted to ‘cross-source’ best practices from the UK to India and viceversa. In 2006, as an entrepreneur, she set up a ‘content research and creation’ company, Get Through Guides, which develops and publishes materials for UK and international professional qualifications and delivers training courses to corporates across India. Vandana also chairs the British Business Group in Pune. In the Queen’s Birthday Honours list announced on 14th June 2008, Vandana was honoured with an OBE for services to British Trade and Investment in India.
Chris Mathias, Entrepreneur and Chairman, Imperial Innovations India (i2India)
Chris was born and raised in India but now lives in the UK. Chris’ primary focus has been
in the IT sector. Following a career at Arthur Andersen, Bain and Co, INSEAD Business
School and a number of successful turnarounds, Chris successfully founded several
companies, most notably Conduit Communications, an IT consulting firm and service
provider. Chris is the chairman of CMG Partners, a director of BiOSS Ltd and a member
of the advisory committee of Barclays Private Bank. He was a co-creator & seed funder
of Digital Links and more recently he was a founder of the British Asian Trust. Chris is
the chairman and one of the seed funders of i2india, a technology commercialisation and
investment company focused on creating commercial value from intellectual property
developed in India.
Rajeev Suri, Head of Marketing- Europe, Middle East and Africa and Global Flagship programs, Infosys
In his current role he directs Infosys brand awareness, brand stature and demand
generation across EMEA region.
As the head of Global Flagship programs, he manages global strategic programs such as the World Economic Forum, Fortune Global Forum. This portfolio includes CXO relationships, partner programs and the Infosys flagship Customer forums.
Rajeev architected the “India Everywhere” campaign, launched in collaboration with the CII at the World Economic Forum, Davos-2006.
Rajeev, as an advisor in the UK Trade and Investment ministry, helps develop the UK Government’s strategy to enhance competitiveness in the ICT sector.

Strategic overview: Helen Alexander, Vice President, CBI
Helen Alexander is the Vice President of the CBI and non executive board member of the
Rolls Royce. Until recently she was also the Chief Executive of The Economist Group. She
has an MBA from INSEAD. She was Managing Director of The Economist Intelligence Unit
from 1993 until the end of 1996. Helen is a non-executive director of Centrica plc, a Trustee
of the Tate Gallery and a governor of St Paul’s Girls’ School. She was awarded a CBE for
services to publishing in 2004.
Chair: Jim O Neill, Head of Global Economic Research, Goldman Sachs
Jim O’Neill, creator of the acronym BRICs, is Head of Global Economic Research
for Goldman Sachs, overseeing the firm’s economic research and the output of its
team around the world. He received his Ph.D. in 1982 from the University of Surrey
after graduating in Economics from Sheffield University in 1978. Jim joined Goldman
Sachs in October 1995 as a Partner, Co-Head of Global Economics and Chief Currency
Economist. Previously, after a brief spell with Bank of America and International Treasury
Management, a division of Marine Midland Bank, Jim was at Swiss Bank Corporation
(SBC), becoming Head of Research globally for SBC in 1991.
David Roberts, Partner, Olswang
David Roberts is a corporate specialist who has advised on a variety of equity capital
raisings, private and public M&A transactions and private equity deals. He has particular
specialisation in public company take over work as well as pan-European M&A work and
has acted for a number of leading investment banks as well as a variety of UK, Australian
and global corporates on various IPO’s, acquisitions and disposals in the UK and Europe.
David’s clients include Dawnay Day, Travelex, Warner Music, MBI International, Monument
Global Capital and Paramount Hotels. David has particular focus on India and is the head
of one the Olswang India practice, one of the leading corporate India practices in London.
Parvinder Bhatia, Group COO, Prime Focus/VTR
Parvinder Bhatia is the Group COO, Prime Focus, VTR . He has experience of advising
clients across the spectrum of media and entertainment sectors, and has gained new
perspectives on strategic thinking, policymaking and imperatives for business in the new
economy. His last 10 years of experience working in companies in consulting space as
well as across print, films and media services provides a wealth of understanding issues
facing companies looking for business opportunities in the convergence era. Associated
with industry bodies in India including FICCI and CII, he has been on their media and
entertainment sector boards in various capacities. Parvinder now heads the operations of
Prime Focus group which is one of the world’s largest post production services companies
with operations in India, UK, USA and Canada.
Manoj Badale, Chairman, Rajasthan Royals
Born in Maharashtra but brought up and educated in England, Manoj Badale is the
chairman of the Rajasthan Royals who, captained and coached by Shane Warne, take on
the Delhi Daredevils in the tournament’s second match. He is also the co-founder and
managing partner of Blenheim Chalcot, an early stage investment group that actively
manages a portfolio of fast growth ventures. Typically, these businesses are innovative
leaders, creating a position based on a market or regulatory discontinuity in technology,
financial services or media.
Terry Hill, Chairman, Arup
Terry Hill is Chairman of the Arup Group, a global design and business consultancy, with
responsibility for the overall strategic direction of the firm. His role is to ensure the delivery
of the best in building, infrastructure and technology consulting to clients throughout
the world, and he has made a successful career in Arup guiding the strategic direction of
large, complex and challenging projects. Terry has a background in civil engineering and
economics, and previously led Arup’s Infrastructure Division, where his role centred on
planning, transport and utilities.
N Sivakumar, Executive Director, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP

Mark Henderson, CEO, Gieves & Hawkes
Mark Henderson is CEO of Gieves & Hawkes Plc – a private Company – a role he has held
for 12 years. Founded in 1771 and based at the iconic address No 1 Savile Row, Gieves
& Hawkes is famed for its bespoke tailoring and its world class menswear ranges. With 9
shops and 12 concessions in the UK and a further 39 in Asia, the Company is embarked on
a steady expansion programme. Mark is also the founder and Chairman of a collective of
13 Savile Row tailors – Savile Row Bespoke – that aims to protect and promote the art of
bespoke tailoring on Savile Row. Prior to joining Gieves & Hawkes in 1996 Mark was with
Alfred Dunhill and the Max Factor Group. Aged 54, he is married and has two sons.
Malav Shroff, CEO, Olympian sailor and founder and organiser, Mumbai International Boat Show
Dr Malav Shroff is the pioneer of Indian leisure boating industry. He is the Managing Director
of Ocean Blue, India’s largest leisure boating company who amongst other things conducts the
Mumbai International Boat Show and are the largest marina developers in India. Ocean Blue
also has many subsidiaries in leisure boating covering all aspects of the luxury trend in India.
Dr Malav Shroff studied medicine in India before doing a DPhil in Orthopaedics in Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He then joined McKinsey & Co, in New York and specialised in sports and health consulting.
Malav participated in Athens 2004 Olympics in sailing and recently went as a coach to the Indian sailing team to the Beijing Olympics 2008. He has participated and won at international level in sailing since junior sailing days in Cadets and also has been a coach to the UK junior and youth sailing teams taking them to wins at World Championships. He himself has won the Albacore Sailing World Championships in USA in 1999 while he was in Oxford.

Strategic overview: Richard Gledhill, Global Leader: Climate Change & Carbon Market Services, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP
Responsibilities include: senior advisory partner in PwC’s Sustainability and Climate
Change Group, London; advising on development and sale of credits from a number of
JI and CDM projects, strategic and tactical responses to climate change issues, carbon
market and climate risk due diligence and advising UK Government on competition for
the pilot Carbon Capture and Storage project.
Other roles include: co-authoring many publications and was a contributing author for the report submitted to the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit in June 2008; adviser to the Carbon Disclosure Project and editor of the 2008 CDP report on the Global 500; leading a climate change training programme for an international bank; representing PwC in the International Emissions Trading Association; IETA Surveys of GHG Market Sentiment; member of several government and industry working groups; expert witness for Parliamentary committee on UK Climate Change Bill.
Chair: James Smith, Chairman, Shell UK
James Smith was appointed Chairman of Shell UK in 2004. He has been with Shell since 1983
and has worked in all the Group’s major businesses.
He was previously on the board of Shell Chemicals and chaired Shell’s CRI catalyst business
during a period of restructuring for profitability. He has been head of resourcing, which involved
ensuring there is a talented and diverse group of leaders for the top 200 jobs in Shell. Much of
his early career was in upstream oil and gas production. He lived for 4 1/2 years in Malaysia and
Brunei and has been involved in Shell business in a number of Middle Eastern countries and in
the US.
James has a degree in physics and is a chartered accountant. Before joining Shell he worked with Accenture. He is married with one son. His hobbies include tennis, golf, skiing, hillwalking and the garden.
Matthew Scott, Co-founder, Cosmos Ignite Innovations
Andrew McMullan, MD, Proven Energy
Andrew joined Proven Energy in 2006 to grow the company with VC backing from Low
Carbon Accelerator, a dedicated renewable fund quoted on AIM. Proven Energy is the
world’s leading supplier of small scale wind turbines; the result of almost thirty years of
innovation and development. A major driver of long term growth for the business is the
opportunity for production and use of turbines in India. Discussions with telecom and
power companies in India have lead to the business seeking further funding from an
Indian industry group.
Prior to Proven Energy Andrew was the founding COO of BoardEx; a business development and sales information service operating in Europe, the US and India.Prior to BoardEx, Andrew worked in CSFB’s Strategy Group.
Andrew worked as a strategy consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton during the 1990s. He holds an MA in Chemistry from Oxford University and an MBA in Finance from Columbia Business School, New York.
Sonjoy Chatterjee, Executive Director, ICICI Bank
Mr Chatterjee is responsible for the bank’s Corporate & Investment Banking and
International Banking. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and a Master’s
degree in Business Administration from IIM, Bangalore.
He was formally Managing Director & CEO of ICICI Bank UK Plc, having set up its first overseas subsidiary in London in 2003
. Mr Chatterjee joined ICICI’s (eICICI) project finance business in 1994. From 1998-2000, he was Head of Strategic Support in the Office of the Group CEO. Between 2000-2002 he was responsible for managing some of the key corporate relationships of eICICI.
He is a member of the EU Advisory Group of the City of London and Chairman of ‘The India Group’ a private sector alliance of India’s largest corporates in UK and Europe. He is also designated as ‘International Envoy’ for the City of London.
Jitesh Gadhia, MD and Global Head of Advisory, Barclays Capital
Jitesh is a senior investment banker, with extensive experience of cross-border M&A and
capital raisings. He played a pioneering role in transactions between emerging market and
western companies.
Mr. Gadhia joined Barclays Capital in August 2008 after seven years at ABN AMRO, where he was most recently Managing Director, Corporate Finance. Previously, he was Chief Executive of a UK-based unit trust manager. Between 1991-1998, Mr. Gadhia was with Baring Brothers.
Mr. Gadhia is a Trustee of the UK’s National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts and also of Guy’s & St Thomas’ Charity, the largest NHS endowment. Mr. Gadhia is a graduate of Cambridge University, and a Sloan Fellow the London Business School.

Peter Flavel, Global Head, The Standard Chartered Private Bank
Peter Flavel was appointed Global Head, Private Banking in March 2006, with the
responsibility to develop and launch The Standard Chartered Private Bank. Private
Banking represents one of the most important segments for Standard Chartered, an
international bank with a history of over 150 years.
Peter joined Standard Chartered in February 2003 as Global Head, Sales, Marketing & Distribution. He subsequently assumed the role of Head, Consumer Banking, Singapore.
In 2007, he led the launch of The Private Bank in 11 markets across Asia, the Middle East and UK, over 5 weeks.
Prior to Standard Chartered, Peter was with the National Australia Bank where he was the General Manager for Personal Financial Services. He has degrees in Law and Commerce/Economics.
Sebastian Prichard Jones, Partner, Macfarlanes LLP
Sebastian Prichard Jones joined Macfarlanes LLP in 1996 and qualified as a solicitor in
1998. He became a partner in 2005.
Sebastian specialises in international trust and tax issues and advising families on their international wealth structuring. In this context he has helped a number of Indian resident and non-resident families put in place structures for their business and private wealth.
Macfarlanes is respected around the world for the quality of its private client legal practice and is widely regarded as pre-eminent in its field. Clients of the practice range from wealthy families to successful entrepreneurs and charities.
